FIFA President Gianni Infantino appears to have intervened with the Swiss attorney general to evade an investigation, according to the Swiss newspaper La Tribune de Genève.
Prosecutors began an investigation in early 2016, shortly after being elected President of FIFA, into a television rights agreement with Infantino, and he was still UEFA’s chief legal officer at the time.
According to the Tribune de Genève, “concerned” about the investigation, the current president of the World Football Federation wrote to his childhood friend, Rinaldo Arnold, who had become a prosecutor in Haut-Valais, in his home area. .
“I will try to explain that I am interested in clarifying everything as soon as possible, to make it clear that I have nothing to do with this issue,” the email revealed in the newspaper.
Arnold, who had already attended a first meeting between Attorney General Michel Lober and Infantino, replied: “The important thing is the meeting in two weeks. If you want, I can accompany you again.”
The meeting took place on April 22, 2016, the newspaper reported, adding that its content remains unknown …
The newspaper contacted FIFA to comment on the revelations, but the World Federation declined to comment.
