The passage of bad weather from Crete and specifically in the municipality of Hersonissos was overwhelming, with the intense meteorological phenomena leaving behind great disasters, as the fast waters washed away the cars in their path, while the houses were flooded.

Firefighters and EMAK teams released at least eight people due to bad weather, while authorities appeal to citizens to avoid unnecessary trips. the video from Malia’s local website neakriti.gr is indicative of the situation:

Landslides have been recorded on a wide range of road networks of the Heraklion Regional Unit, while the Crete Region Technical Works Directorate has been informed that the Old National Road from the Stalis – Mohos crossing to Sissi’s crossing has been blocked.

Likewise, the BOAK section in the Selinari area has been closed, because rocks have fallen on the road. Finally, the second exit from the BOAK peninsula (before the Stalis tunnel heading east) has been closed because the road has been destroyed.

The Fire Department’s announcement for bad weather:

Due to the heavy rains that occurred in the morning hours of November 10, 2020, the Regional Business Center of Heraklion, Crete, received 230 calls mainly for pumping and in some cases to transport people to safety. The areas where the phenomena manifested themselves with the greatest intensity were: Hersonissos, Anissaras, Gouves, Gournes, Analipsi, Stalis and Malia.

By order of the Head of PS. Lieutenant General Stefanos Kolokouris, the fire services of the Crete region have been placed under general surveillance. Since the phenomenon of heavy rains is ongoing, we ask our fellow citizens of the Crete Region to be especially careful and, in the event of floods, follow the instructions of the competent authorities.
