At the start of the race, Norris and Ricciardo took advantage of Boots’s poor start, leaving the Finn behind, who fell to sixth place. Red Bull’s Albon also had a big loss of places, losing 5 places and from 10th to 10th. For his part, Lewis Hamilton started the fight strong and made a significant difference to his pursuers from a young age.
On lap 7, Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was forced to resign due to a braking problem, while on lap 20 Kevin Magnussen was ruled out. Because the Danish Haas driver’s car had stopped in a bad place on the track, the race judges decided to abandon the safety car.
All the drivers pitted to change their tires, however the ups and downs would come later. In round 25, Charles Leclerc did not go well in Parabolica, so he lost control and fell over the protective barriers. The Ferrari driver left safe and sound and was subsequently examined by doctors, who confirmed his good condition. The safety car started again, but a little later the race was temporarily suspended with a red flag, as it was impossible to clear the track.
All the drivers went back into the pits and the race started again after 25 minutes with a new start. Hamilton started well again, but fell to 17th place due to a 10-second penalty for illegally entering the pit lane. Thus, Pierre Gusly was at the top of the race, followed by Saint and Stroll.
On lap 31, Red Bull driver Max Ferstappen was forced to leave, following an instruction from his team due to an engine failure. For his part, Hamilton then started picking up the pace, moving up to seventh place, but couldn’t do more.
For the remainder of the race, Pierre Gusly resisted pressure from Carlos Sainte and celebrated his maiden Formula 1 victory. Lance Stroll was also honored, as with his choice to make one less pit stop, he finished third.
