Trip planning can begin

AImhütte, the Danish dunes or even the Mediterranean coast: the possibilities for summer vacations abroad are increasing with the announcement by the Federal Government to ease border controls again. “We combine this with the clear objective that we want to travel free again from mid-June,” Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) said on Wednesday. Over the weekend, checks at the Luxembourg border will initially be skipped, all crossings to France, Austria and Switzerland may be reused in the future, but “random checks” remain. This facilitates passenger traffic. According to the government, tourists should not leave yet, but they can wait. The Federal Foreign Office’s travel warning is valid until June 14, a week before summer vacation begins in the first federal state.

“It will certainly be possible for Europe to lift the travel warning sooner than for other travel destinations, provided the current positive trend continues in many countries,” said Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD). The EU Commission welcomed the announcements. “This is the first step, by no means hasty, towards normality,” said EU Interior Commissioner Ylva Johansson. The Commission also put forward proposals for fewer controls. She did not give a specific date and criteria, however the proposals would not be binding on the Member States.
