Grant Hendrik Tonne (SPD) wants to present his “10 point agenda” at the press conference. According to his ministry, this includes, among other things, a voluntary corona rapid test offer for school and nursery staff. It is also about new advancements in the areas of distance learning and digitization, easing school management and increasing protection against infections. Measures to empower children and youth are also on the agenda. It was already known in advance that compulsory attendance at primary schools would be suspended until the end of the month. Therefore, parents can decide for themselves whether their child should participate in alternate lessons.

Tonne demands strength for students and children

Tonne had called for a joint effort for students and children in the run-up to the federal-state talks on Wednesday. “For weeks now, children and young people have been making a great contribution in the running of the bulls. Contact restrictions and the fact that all sports and hobbies are eliminated affects young people particularly in their development,” said the minister. He called on the federal and state governments to jointly discuss how learning deficits can be offset and how psychosocial burdens can be cushioned.

“The consequences for children are likely to be immense.”

In addition, the Lower Saxony education minister demanded financial help from the federal government for care during the holidays, additional learning opportunities, homework help and crown tests for teachers and educators. “We are right to help the economy and business, so it shouldn’t be too expensive for us as a society as a whole to empower children and young people and prevent them from being harmed.” Now he expects a greater commitment from the federal government, “because the consequences of weeks of school and daycare closures are likely to be immense for children.”
