Franziska Giffey and PhD thesis: SPD hope referendum – comment

[ad_1]

The Free University (FU) had examined Franziska Giffey’s doctoral thesis for what seemed like forever, only to leave it in the lukewarm form of a reprimand. Now it starts again, but this time it should be: hopp or top.

Giffey reacted to this college course on Friday in a tactical and emotionally calculated way.

In the future, you will refrain from using your title, no matter how you finish the new exam. And she personally makes the decision of the FU. Who I am and what I can do does not depend on this title. What defines me as a person is not based on this academic degree. ”

The past does not bode well

The truth is, of course, that it’s not about Giffey’s humanity, but about his career and the future of the SPD (from Berlin). In late November, Giffey wants to be elected president of the state, and in fall 2021 she will likely become the ruling mayor. And if that succeeds, she would be number one among the remaining SPD presiding ministers, with all the federal political consequences.

It’s unclear if Giffey is doing well with the thesis business. Or better: if your party allows you to get out of there. The past, at least, does not bode well, if we remember the case of Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg.

But there are also differences. Guttenberg also practiced forward defense nine years ago and also gave up his title, but it was all decided within a few weeks. By the time of his resignation, Guttenberg’s title had already been revoked and his countless plagiarisms were too obvious.

With Giffey the case is a little different. Your university has verified and is now doing it again. The procedure can end either way, otherwise you would not have to check further. Therefore, the withdrawal demands are excessive at this time.

But: Giffey is known to be more than just the office of family minister.

So should anger over the speech prevent the Berlin SPD from electing her as president? And should she make Berliners avoid appointing her mayor?

Yeah who can, who should say that

But it is probably better for the Berlin SPD and the Berlin population itself. Giffey’s (possible) misconduct is on the table and the SPD is better off planning its election campaign worst of cases assumes that the 42-year-old will have her title revoked in the end.

Chancellor’s quirky bon mot

So the following applies: Anyone who is named president and lead candidate knows the doctoral thesis. And whoever chooses her in the fall of 2021 is voting for a woman who for reasons no longer has or has lost her PhD at that time. So, in the end, it’s a people’s decision.

Anyone who wants to acknowledge a degradation of science in this or even be reminded of the kindly odd thing about the Chancellor with whom he once tried to back Guttenberg is wrong. Angela Merkel said shortly before Guttenberg’s resignation in February 2011 that she had appointed not a scientific assistant but a defense minister. That might be the case, but it did not change the fact that Guttenberg had a Ph.D. at the time of his appointment, which he had obtained fraudulently.

With Franziska Giffey, however, it is clear before the respective elections that there is a problem. Hopefully the next few months will show how big this problem is as soon as possible.

Both the SPD in their party congress and the Berliners should be able to cope with this situation in the elections. Either way.
