The Attorney General of the United States, Barr, will leave office before Christmas. He informed President Trump of this in a letter. He had openly contradicted the president in his baseless allegations of electoral fraud.
US Attorney General Bill Barr, who openly denied President Donald Trump’s allegations of election fraud, resigns. Trump announced the minister’s departure on Twitter. The president-elect wrote that he had a “very nice meeting” with Barr at the White House. The Minister of Justice will relinquish office before Christmas to “spend the holidays with his family.”
“Our relationship was very good, he did an excellent job,” Trump continued. The president also released the resignation letter of the minister, who had long been considered a close confidant of Trump.
Barr’s departure after expected criticism
Barr caused a stir in early December with the statement that, contrary to Trump’s claims, there has thus far been no evidence of large-scale fraud in the November 3 presidential election. “So far we have not seen any fraud on a scale that could have led to a different result,” the 70-year-old said in an interview. It has since been expected that Barr would not remain attorney general until the end of Trump’s term on January 20.
Former Assistant Attorney General Jeff Rosen will temporarily take over official business, as Trump announced. The president has yet to acknowledge his defeat to Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential election. Trump announced Barr’s resignation just as Biden had obtained the necessary majority in the electorate’s national vote on the future president.
Like Trump, Barr warned against voting by mail
As Attorney General, Barr tried to present himself as an independent leader who would not give in to political pressure. Yet Democrats repeatedly accused him of acting more like Trump’s personal attorney.
Before the presidential election in early November, Barr warned people that mail-in votes could be particularly vulnerable to fraud during the coronavirus pandemic. Voting by mail had also repeatedly criticized Trump, while at the same time it was known that Democratic voters were more likely to vote by letter than supporters of Republicans in terms of voting behavior.
Barr appointed special investigators to investigate Russia
Barr also appointed a special investigator to investigate the background and origins of the Russia investigation. The Russia affair overshadowed Trump’s years in office and the investigation into it has always been a thorn in the president’s side; revolved around the question of whether and how Russia interfered in the 2016 US election in favor of Trump. This constantly spoke of a “witch hunt” and repeatedly demanded that investigations be launched against the investigators, and Barr raised this to a higher level in early December when he appointed the special investigator.
He also ordered Justice Department officials to review the investigation into Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and then tried to have Flynn’s allegations dropped. Flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI on the Russia affair, was recently pardoned by Trump.
Although Barr clearly followed Trump’s line, their relationship was not always perfect. That year, Barr complained publicly that the president’s tweets about the Justice Department cases made it “impossible” for him to do his job.
