Donald Trump on possible electoral defeat: “I may have to leave the country”

Two and a half weeks before the US presidential election, incumbent Donald Trump has speculated about a possible defeat. At a campaign rally in Macon, Georgia, Trump said, “Can you imagine I’m losing? What am I going to do?” Laughing, he claimed to have lost to the “worst candidate in political history” in this case. “I’m not going to feel so good. I may have to leave the country. I don’t know.”

Trump also stepped up his attacks on the challenger’s family. “Joe Biden is a corrupt politician,” he said during another campaign appearance in Ocala, Florida. “And the Biden family is a criminal enterprise.”

Trump added: “The Bidens got rich while America was robbed.” The president of the United States called the “mainstream media” “enemies of the people” and accused them of not reporting on “the greatest story in the world”, referring to the alleged corruption of Democrat Biden.

Trump supporters chanted “Lock him up” when Biden’s name was mentioned – this was the catchphrase that Trump supporters had used in the election campaign four years ago to challenge Hillary Clinton. Trump has been raising corruption allegations against former Vice President Biden and his son Hunter for a long time and without proof, who has now been fired by the “New York Post” tabloid.

The newspaper tried in recent days to link Joe Biden to his son Hunter Biden’s earlier deals in Ukraine and China. The newspaper published emails alleging that Hunter Biden was trying to cash in on his father’s office as vice president at the time.

The newspaper also evaluated the emails as evidence that Joe Biden, contrary to his testimony, knew about his son’s controversial foreign business. Joe Biden denies that he was guilty of anything. The authenticity of the emails has not been confirmed.

How the emails reached the public is also questionable. They are said to have been found on a laptop in a repair shop. The “New York Post” said it received a hard drive copy from Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal attorney and close confidante, last weekend. The copy was made by the owner of the repair shop before the FBI seized the laptop in December 2019, the newspaper reported.

Hunter Biden was a member of the Burisma gas company supervisory board from 2014 to 2019. Trump accused Biden, among other things, of using his position as vice president in the Barack Obama administration (until 2017) to try to protect his son of the Ukrainian judiciary. Biden rejects that. Trump wanted to get investigations in Ukraine. The conflict sparked an impeachment process against Trump, which failed in February due to a Republican majority in the Senate.

“Behavior I would expect from IS”

Biden, in turn, described it as “amazing” that Trump does not clearly condemn white racist groups. These are “domestic terrorists,” Biden said, referring to a recent plan to kidnap about 20 guests and journalists in the city of Southfield, Michigan.

During his speech, Biden stood alongside Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a sharp critic of Trump. Last week, 13 extremists were arrested for allegedly conspiring to kidnap Whitmer to start a “civil war.”

“This is the behavior that you would expect from IS,” Biden said. It should surprise all Americans. “The failure to judge these people is amazing.”

Trump had criticized in a tweet after the governor learned of the plan: “Instead of thanking” the successful work of the FBI, “she treats me like a white racist.”

Less than three weeks before the election, the president in some cases is significantly behind Biden in polls: In national polls, the incumbent is on average ten percentage points behind. The Republican also lags behind the Democrat in particularly important key states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
