United States President Donald Trump has been curbed in a business lawsuit at his Washington hotel. A lawsuit against the president that was dismissed last summer can now be carried out, according to a federal appeals court in Richmond, Virginia, on Thursday.
Allegation: illegal benefit
Attorneys general in the capital Washington and the state of Maryland sued Trump. They accuse him of illegally profiting from visits by foreign government officials or state officials to the hotel near the White House. Trump violates constitutional anti-corruption clauses by accepting money from foreign or domestic government officials through the hotel.
A panel of three judges at the Richmond Court of Appeals dismissed the lawsuit in July 2019, arguing that Attorney General Brian Frosh and Karl Racine did not have a legal position to move the case forward. The entire university, made up of 15 judges, has now overturned this decision.
Frosh and Racine welcomed the turn in the case. “We believe the constitution will ultimately prevail against President Trump,” the attorneys general said in a joint statement. The case goes back to the district courts in Washington and Maryland, where it will be followed.
