The camp of US President Donald Trump continues its campaign against alleged electoral fraud in the presidential elections. Trump’s private attorney, Rudy Giuliani, wanted to attend a hearing of Republican senators in the state of Pennsylvania on allegations of fraud on Wednesday, as announced by Trump’s campaign team. According to media reports, Trump’s planned participation was canceled on short notice.
Among other things, the CNN news channel had reported that Trump would participate in the event in the city of Gettysburg. Gettysburg is best known as the site of a historic battle during the United States Civil War and a speech delivered by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.
Reporters accredited to the White House gathered Wednesday to escort Trump to Pennsylvania. But then they were told that the trip had been canceled. The trip was not on the official White House agenda.
80,000 votes ahead of Biden
Trump has refused to acknowledge his defeat in the November 3 presidential election to Democrat Joe Biden for weeks. The headline speaks of an alleged massive electoral fraud without any proof. Election officials for Trump’s Republicans strongly reject this. On Wednesday the president wrote on the Twitter short message service in capital letters and without any context: “Election rigged!”
Trump’s campaign team has already failed with a series of lawsuits against the election result. Richter repeatedly dismissed the accusations in clear terms as unfounded, even in Pennsylvania, where Biden had won by more than 80,000 votes. The key state election official in battle in the eastern United States certified the election result on Tuesday.
Giuliani also announced hearings on alleged voter fraud in Arizona and Michigan, two states in which Biden had also won. The president’s refusal to acknowledge his electoral defeat has also come under increasing criticism from Republicans. Observers fear that Trump could permanently undermine confidence in the electoral system as a cornerstone of democracy.
More recently, however, the government initiated a handover of official business to Biden. The newly elected president’s transition team, who will be sworn in on January 20, will have access to federal funds, government buildings, employees and important government information.
