reBerlin virologist Christian Drosten has become a handicraft bestseller in the Erzgebirge – like the figure of a smoking man with a smoking head. In reality, it should have sent its seven permanent employees full-time short-time work as of January, wood artist Tino Günther said on request on Thursday.
But to process orders for his drugstore, he has now hired additional staff. More than 5,000 orders were received from individuals alone, in addition to many inquiries from business partners and retailers. The figure is also in demand from abroad, such as Austria, the United States and Japan, according to the “Free Press” (Thursday edition).
“The response is sensational,” Günther said cheerfully. Many foreign media also reported on his character. “With each report, the demand has gone up like the contagion curve.” Orders have now made up a volume that is generally achieved in a year at Christmas markets.

The smoker is not really his specialty: “I’m a toymaker, not a turner.” That is why it has subcontracted jobs to other companies in the region, such as the manufacture of weapons or felt.
The 26-centimeter-tall figure in a white coat and tousled hair stands tall on a stylized corona virus. She also wears a mask. The smoke does not come out of the smoker’s mouth as usual, but rather his head smokes.
So far more than 100 pieces have been produced. “Production is just beginning,” Günther explained. Because production is manual work. However, given the success of his Drosten figure, the wood artist is not planning more figures with Corona motifs or a virologist series.
To justify this, he bows to the music: “After a hit, the second song is usually a flop.” His next project is more like figures for a wooden game in collaboration with a children’s book author.
