After several Covid 19 cases: the meat industry doesn’t see “a quick fix”

The German meat industry is criticized for an increasing number of coronavirus infections. However, this is not due to production conditions, the industry argues. However, she does not see a short-term solution.

The German meat industry is resisting criticism of the spread of coronavirus infections among its employees. Working conditions are not the reason for the spread of the pathogen in companies, said the managing director of the German meat industry association Heike Harstick, the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.

As an essential infrastructure, the meat industry simply could not stop production like the auto industry. She continued to work to secure the food supply. Harstick warned of stricter requirements for the meat industry: “There is no quick and easy solution.”

For example, if employees stipulate an individual accommodation and this would result in higher rents, many companies would no longer be competitive. Parts of the industry would then migrate, Harstick said. Criticism of the meat industry due to the spread of the corona virus had recently increased.

Politicians and unionists demanded stricter controls and better working and living conditions, especially for foreign workers in collective accommodation, where the risk of infection is particularly high. Greens faction leader Anton Hofreiter spoke in an AFP interview this weekend about an “exploitative business model” that “must now be over.”
