With 91% occupancy of ICU beds, Rionegro declares hospital red alert

Due to the sustained increase in the occupancy of ICU beds in the municipality of Rionegro, in eastern Antioquia, which has remained above 80% in recent days, the Ministry of Health and Social Inclusion declared the hospital red alert in the afternoon of this Friday.

According to the Secretary of Health, Jorge Rivas, the municipality has 105 beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), of which only 9% remain available. For this reason, the alert is given “so that our hospitals and clinics prepare for the next few days,” said Rivas.

The measure was declared by circular 013 of 2020, issued by the municipal Health Secretary, before the Departmental CRUE, the Rionegro IPS, the Eastern Health Board, the Attorney General’s Office and the Municipal Personería.

It should be noted that the department is also close to declaring the measure, because if the hospital capacity is maintained above 80% for two more days, the Antioquia Health Secretariat would make the decision to enter a red alert.

According to the latest report, published last Thursday, the department has 937 ICU beds for infected patients, of which 751 are occupied by confirmed and suspected cases of covid.

This measure restricts care in medical centers, allowing only urgent procedures to be performed so that space is freed up in ICUs.

“It is normal that we are reaching these levels after the economic reactivation, that is why we invite the entire community of the municipality of Rionegro to follow the biosecurity measures, to learn to live with the coronavirus and to take care of ourselves as much as possible” Rivas concluded.
