(CNN) – In exactly seven weeks, Donald Trump will no longer be president. And likewise, her eldest daughter, Ivanka, will be out of work.
You see, Ivanka, along with her husband, Jared Kushner, have spent the past four years alongside their father in Washington, emerging as important actors behind the scenes (and sometimes in front of) the, um, stormy Trump administration.
While Ivanka will no longer work in the White House, she is not going to just disappear. As Jacqueline Alemany of The Washington Post points out in an excellent story about the president’s daughter:
“It is not clear where exactly Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, who like Ivanka is a senior White House adviser, will physically land after they leave Washington in January, as expected…
“… But former friends, colleagues and associates of the couple believe that wherever they live, the first daughter will be contemplating how to maximize her political capital, whether that means a royal candidacy or a more tenuous influence in Republican circles in a world where President Trump still has enormous political influence.
If you ask Donald Trump, his daughter is capable of being chosen for anything. In 2016, he reportedly considered appointing her his vice president (!) And as he was campaigning for a second term this year, he seemed to propel her into his post.
“I also want to see the first female president, but I don’t want to see the first female president come to office the way she does. [Kamala Harris] I would, ”Trump said at a rally in New Hampshire in late August. “Everyone says, ‘We want Ivanka!’ I do not blame them”.
The problem with all of that, of course, is Trump himself. He seems ready, willing and able to run again for president in 2024, which would mean that Ivanka cannot run for president that year as well.
And if you can’t do that, then your options are relatively limited.
She can’t go back to New York City and, say, run for mayor. (He would probably lose in an embarrassing way.)
If Ivanka and her family end up moving to her father’s club in Bedminster, NJ, as has been widely speculated, she could theoretically run for the 7th Congressional District, a seat currently held by Democratic Rep. Tom Malinowski.
But would Ivanka view the House of Representatives as a small plate? (Yes, yes, I would.)
Given all that, it seems likely that Ivanka will hang on in New Jersey and bide her time, lending her name and star power to Republican fundraising efforts and being as kind to the Republican establishment as possible (if that exists). and collect tokens.
The Point: While there is no obvious political office for Ivanka to run for right now, that doesn’t mean she will disappear from the national political radar. If you think that, you don’t know Ivanka.
