“We are going to prevent with this combination of herbs in the chamber, avoid this type of contagion and further spread,” said Gonzalo Choquehuanca, a specialist in traditional medicine.

In the city of El Alto, neighboring La Paz, in Bolivia, the first “disinfection booth” was installed, which works on the basis of natural herbal steam, as a preventive measure against the coronavirus.

In this chamber, a person enters and, instead of the dilute sodium hypochlorite solution that they usually use to sanitize, they receive the vapor of eucalyptus, wira wira (run away run away) and chamomile, which boil at the moment.

The process is completed with disinfectant gel, which the people in charge of the camera throw to the people after going outside again.

The measure is accepted by the Bolivian Ministry of Health, which has a vice-ministry of Traditional Medicine.

“This is a fumigation space, if you will, based on medicinal plants. When people enter the chamber they absorb the healing benefits of eucalyptus, strengthening the immune system for colds, and potentially the coronavirus, “said Deputy Minister of Traditional Medicine, Felipe Quilla.

Gonzalo Choquehuanca, a specialist in traditional medicine and one of the people in charge of the camera, commented that with this they seek to “prevent” the entry of the virus, which “first resides in the respiratory tract.”

“We are going to prevent with this combination of herbs in the chamber, avoid that type of infection and more spread,” he said.

Ángel Mamani of the National Council of Traditional and Ancient Medicine of Bolivia, for his part, mentioned that “traditional medicine is suitable to counteract epidemics, it is a natural prevention”.

He explained, for example, that eucalyptus is an expectorant, which helps flush bacteria and phlegm from the lungs. In addition, to the three plants they already use, cinnamon and rosemary can be added to this type of chamber.

“You breathe health”

After going through the camera, Irene Apaza, a resident of El Alto, commented that “it is very good because it is natural.”

“All plants are natural, they are not chemical, they are natural, plants that do good to the body, not like scientific medicines that have chemicals, this does not have, everything is natural, to prevent, nor to remove (the coronavirus)”, added.

Elías López, another of those who underwent the disinfection, said it was a good experience. “You enter this chamber and the smell is very strong, more than eucalyptus and you breathe health. I think there should be more of these cameras in other areas of El Alto, “he said.

The executive of the Departmental Federation of Traditional Medicine, Edgar Ticonipa, commented that they seek to replicate the initiative throughout the country. “Traditional doctors can help, we can replicate this knowledge at the national level, we are seeing that the coronavirus is advancing, but we can stop with prevention and this is a way of preventing, “he emphasized.

There is no scientific demonstration

Víctor Hugo Vargas, a Bolivian doctor quoted by La Razón, has indicated that “there is no valid study on eucalyptus and their help to fight the flu, asthma and other respiratory diseases. “

“Nor can it be scientifically proven or claimed to produce any benefit in the prevention or treatment of coronavirus infection. Not even in sprays, much less infusions to drink,” he said.

The World Health Organization (WHO) points out regarding these alternatives that “although some western, traditional or home remedies can provide comfort and alleviate the symptoms of covid-19, there is no evidence that current medications can prevent or cure the disease

Therefore, this organization does not recommend self-medication to prevent or cure covid-19.

At the moment, he announces that there are several clinical trials underway “with western and traditional drugs” and will provide information on this when the results are available.
