The Italian cyclist Davide Ballerini (Deceuninck-Quick Step) has donned the first leader’s jersey of the sixth edition of the Tour de La Provence after winning this Thursday in the first stage, a day of 179.3 kilometers disputed between the French towns of Aubagne and Six-Fours-les-Plages.
With a time of 4 hours, 43 minutes and 23 seconds, Ballerini prevailed in the arrival at Six-Fours-les-Plages ahead of the French Arnaud Dmare (Groupama-FDJ) and Nacer Bouhanni (Arka-Samsic), second and third respectively.
The French Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step), current Champion of the World, and the Italians Gianni Moscon (Ineos Grenadiers) and Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) made up a breakout that began 69 kilometers from the end and ran outstanding until the squad finished with their options 2 km from the finish line.
With the bonuses of the stage victory, Davide Ballerini is placed as the first general leader with 4 seconds ahead of Arnaud Demare and 6 over Nacer Bouhanni.
Ballerini will defend the lead this Friday in the second and third stage, 170.6 kilometers between Cassis and Manosque.
