After 34 years of having registered the accident at the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin nuclear power plant, near the city of Chernobyl, fascinating species continue to appear, despite the fact that at first it was believed that hundreds of years would pass for life to return to this place.
This time the one in charge of stealing all the looks it was the butterfly Catocala fraxini, considered one of the largest in Ukraine and Europe.

The insect, whose size is greater than any other butterfly, surprised the scientific world after being found by specialists from the Radiological and Ecological Reserve of the Chernobyl Biosphere, as it is part of the list of threatened species of Ukraine, which is why its sighting it constitutes a light of hope for that species.
One of its main characteristics is the length of its front wing that can reach 4.5 centimeters, while the total wingspan during flight reaches 11 centimeters, so its size is comparable to that of a bird.

They are nocturnal animals that remain at rest during the day on the trunks of the trees. Its front wings cover the rear ones (more striking for their colors), reason for which they go unnoticed, since they are camouflaged with the barks.

Habitually its hind wings are black and a strip of very variable color runs through the center which can range from light blue to purple.
According to experts, this variability in its coloration may be due to climatic factors. It’s flight quiet though when threatened, it flies into a rapid zigzag flight.
