An increase in the cases of contagion of covid-19 among children and young people is becoming evident in the Valley, warned this Monday the Secretary of Health, María Cristina Lesmes.

“Unfortunately, it is in the group of young people where the disease is transmitted with greater speed, this because they do not have a connotation of risk. We already have 1,800 children under the age of 0 to 9 who have the virus or have had it and 3,500 infected children under 19, with three cases of death, ”the official revealed.

According to the statistics revealed by the official, in the group of 20 to 30 years of age there have been 15 thousand cases and 16 deaths; in those aged 40 to 49, 12 thousand cases with 137 deaths; in the range of 50 to 59 years, 9 thousand cases with 267 deaths; from 60 to 69 years, 3,500 cases with 537 deaths; from 70 to 79 years, 2,100 cases with 278 deaths, and between 80 and 89 years of age 1,650 cases, which have claimed the lives of 544 people.

As for those older than 90 years, 200 people have been diagnosed, of which 135 have died.

“The figures show that young people are also at risk and we ask them to take care of themselves because they are the ones who bring the disease home. It is the young people who get together and are not complying with the biosecurity measures, without masks and without respecting the distance, it is they who unknowingly acquire the disease and take it home, “said the Valle Health Secretary.

In this regard, Governor Clara Luz Roldán indicated that with health it is necessary to take self-care measures that allow us to continue with activities.

“This is a time when we have to make decisions, we do not trust ourselves and we believe that because there are few children we do not have to take the precaution of protecting them,” he added.

This Monday, 680 new infections were confirmed in the Valley, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases to 65,733 in the department.

In addition, eight new deaths from the virus were reported in the region, four of them in Cali and the remaining in Palmira, Cairo, Cartago and Roldanillo.
