The Vatican is investigating the “like” in the photo of a scantily clad Brazilian model that was taken from Pope Francis’ official Instagram account.
It is unclear when the account clicked “like” on the image of Natalia Garibotto, who was dressed in a schoolgirl uniform.
News sites on the internet began reporting on the incident last Friday, before the action in the image was changed to “I don’t like” on the platform.
Now, the Vatican reported that officials from the Holy See are investigating the details of what happened in the Pope’s account.
The papal press office told the BBC that “as far as is known the ‘like’ did not come from the Holy See.” The Vatican is in contact with Instagram to establish where it came from, the source added.
The Pope’s official Instagram account, listed under the username franciscus, has 7.4 million followers all over the world.
Last Tuesday, sources close to the Vatican press office informed the Catholic News Agency that the accounts were “managed by a team of employees” and that an internal investigation was underway.
Garibotto commented to a follower on Instagram that she was “excited” about the “like” because she was religious.
“At least I’ll go to heaven”he wrote on Twitter.
