Teacher strike: Main mobilizations for today October 20 | Fecode – Education – Life

The Colombian Federation of Education Workers (Fecode) begins a new day of unemployment this Tuesday, which this time will be 48 hours, that is, until next Wednesday, October 21.

According to the organization, which brings together several teacher unions from all over the country, the purpose of this demonstration is to show its rejection of the alternation model for face-to-face return to classrooms, which is combined with virtual sessions.

This is what Nelson Alarcón, president of Fecode, mentioned to EL TIEMPO: “This strike is not a whim of the teachers, or because we don’t want to work. We believe that the necessary conditions are not in place to return to classrooms safely. The country’s schools do not have the resources to implement the protocols. We need to think about the health of children, teachers and education workers ”.

Likewise, the teachers point out the Government’s failure to comply with the agreements reached in 2019 that included, among other things, a reform of the National Participation System.

The cessation of activities announced by the teachers will begin this Tuesday, a day that will not have large mobilizations but will take place mainly amid virtual activities such as talks and forums.

However, some regions will have caravans, as is the case in Armenia, where activities will begin at 9 am at the Centennial Stadium. The same will happen in Antioquia, where the mobilizations will begin in Bello and the municipality of Caldas, to the Parque de las Luces, in Medellín.

In Bogotá there will also be a march from the headquarters of the Education secretary (on Calle 26 with Carrera 66) to the facilities of the Ministry of Education (Calle 43 with Carrera 57), which will also start from 9 am

For its part, large mobilizations are planned for Wednesday, such as marches and vehicular caravans and sit-ins in the country’s main cities such as Bogotá, Barranquilla, Bucaramanga, Medellín and Cali, among others, within the framework of the strike called for that day. by other sectors of society such as labor unions and student organizations.
