British cyclist Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadier) was proclaimed champion of the 2020 Giro d’Italia this Sunday, at the end of the final 15.6-kilometer time trial in Milan, 39 seconds ahead of Australian Jai Hindley (Sunweb).

Geoghegan Hart and Hindley faced the final clock with the same time in the general, something that had never happened in the history of the great tours, and the British rider finished with a time of 18 minutes and 14 seconds, for 18 minutes and 53 seconds from Hindley.

The time trial was won with authority by Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadier), world chrono champion, who entered with a time of 17 minutes and 16 seconds, with a 32-second advantage over the Australian Rohan Dennis (Ineos) and the Belgian Victor Campenaerts (NTT ).

For the first time in Grand Tour history, two riders, Geoghegan Hart and Hindley, reached the last stage in the same time. The Australian came out last in the clock and with the pink jersey, having 87 hundredths of an advantage over the British.

Everything was decided in the final 15.6 kilometers of time trial, after the 3,345 traveled in these three weeks, from the southern region of Sicily to the northern Milan, did not mark any difference between the times of the two contenders.
It was 16:09 in Italy (15:09 GMT) when it was time for Geoghegan Hart, while Hindley started his test three minutes later, at 16.12 (15.12 GMT).

They competed when the test in favor of Ganna, a chrono specialist, was already sentenced, who entered with a time of 17 minutes and 16 seconds, more than half a minute faster than his teammate Rohan Dennis and Campenaerts.

The numbers favored Geoghegan Hart, who was faster than Hindley in eight of the previous ten time trials in which they faced, according to data from Italian television RAI, and the Briton imposed his superiority in this specialty.

The two riders had the same time after the first three kilometers, but from that moment Geoghegan Hart accumulated an increasingly wide advantage.

They were already more than ten seconds ahead of the halfway point of the event and at the Milanese finish line, a few steps from the Duomo, Geoghegan Hart finished with 39 seconds ahead of Hindley.

He became the second British rider capable of winning the Giro d’Italia after Chris Froome, in a difficult Giro for Ineos, who lost right after starting their leader Geraint Thomas.

Geoghegan Hart, 25, also snatched the Giro’s best junior title from Hindley.

Portuguese Joao Almeida (Deceunick-Quick Step), who wore the pink jersey for fifteen days, finished fourth overall, ahead of Spaniard Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-McLaren), fifth.
