Surcolombiana University anticipates degrees to Medicine students

The decision, made by the Academic Council of this study center, anticipates in six weeks the degrees of students who work as internal doctors and will be available to become part of the fight that is being waged worldwide against the coronavirus.

More than 30 students from the Medicine program at the Universidad Surcolombiana will graduate early to begin being part of the medical and health personnel that fight against COVID-19 in the department of Huila.

The announcement was made by the rector (e) of this alma mater, Pablo Emilio Bahamón Cerquera, when announcing the decision by a majority of the Academic Council of this house of studies, taken during the session on the previous Tuesday.

The students who will receive their medical degrees are currently completing their rotating internship at the University Hospital of Neiva, mostly, and in other healthcare centers with which the USCO has an agreement.

Although they have six weeks to complete the internship, due to the current global pandemic, which requires reinforcements of human capital in health, this time will be ignored and they will be able to receive their diploma as doctors in accordance with the decision made by the Academic Council based on decrees of the National Government.

“These students will already be professionals who are going to work hard to combat COVID-19. It is a measure that is taken with reference to the guidelines of the regulations at the national level due to the need, at this time, to have health professionals to combat this scourge worldwide, “said the Rector on the determination.

This was approved by a majority within the Academic Council of the Universidad Surcolombiana. The graduation of the new doctors will take place in the coming days and their title will be issued on April 24, 2020.

The Faculty of Health of the Universidad Surcolombiana will deliver new medical professionals to the Huila community.

Student application

The academic vice-rector of USCO, Norma Constanza Guarnizo, explained that the decision of the Academic Council was made after a request made in this regard by students of the Medicine program of this alma mater who are doing their internship at the University Hospital of Neiva, and after requesting concept, -which was favorable- the collegiate body determined to advance the graduation.

“They (the students) requested, based on Legislative Decree 538 of April 12, 2020, where the Ministry of Health and Social Protection says that universities, within the framework of their university autonomy, will be able to graduate students from undergraduate and postgraduate in the clinical areas and in the last semester of academic programs in medicine, “added the Vice-Chancellor.

Ready against COVID-19

The representative of the students before the Academic Council, Hugo Bolaños, considered that the decision will allow “to have new personnel in case of an eventual peak of the pandemic.”

However, he considered it important to guarantee the biosecurity conditions indicated by the different health organs.

The rotating internship is completed in the last year of the medical degree, in semesters 11 to 12. The internship site is the ‘Hernando Moncaleano Perdomo’ University Hospital, in Neiva, where it rotates through six specialties for a year, lasting of each of them for two months.

Additionally, there are agreements at the San Antonio Departmental Hospital, in Pitalito; Maria Immaculate Hospital, Florence; and ESE Carmen Emilia Ospina, from Neiva, currently suspended.

The internship started on June 1, 2019 and would end on May 31, for a total of 48 weeks.
