Superindustry investigates funeral homes that may be overcharging for Covid-19 deaths

The Superintendency of Industry and Commerce reported that it is conducting an investigation against at least 86 sites dedicated to funeral services nationwide because it appears that they would be overcharging for Covid-19 victims.

“These actions are carried out after reports were filed on alleged irregularities in the services provided by funeral service companies, related to delays in the provision of the service, poor handling of the information provided to relatives of deceased persons and additional charges, taking advantage of the health emergency decreed by the National Government because of COVID-19. ”, explained the SIC in a statement.

The entity required that funeral service providers report on the biosecurity procedures implemented, in cases related to the new coronavirus.

“Funeral service providers must comply with the recommendations regarding the safe handling, transportation and disposal of bodies infected with the COVID-19 virus, in order to reduce the risk of contamination,” he said.

If any conduct that violates the rights of consumers is verified, such as misleading or insufficient information, abusive clauses, lack of quality, suitability, security or other infraction in terms of the Consumer Statute, the SIC will impose fines of up to 2,000 SMMLV.
