A rare disease in India leaves one person dead and causes the hospitalization of more than 300 in the state of Andhra Pradesh, south of that country, according to authorities.
According to the Press Trust of India news agency, so far the registered victim is a 45-year-old man, who was hospitalized with symptoms similar to those of epilepsy, nausea and died on Sunday of a heart attack, reports the DW channel.
The disease, unknown so far, was detected this weekend in the city of Eluru. The patients have presented, in addition to nausea, anxiety and even loss of consciousness.
Authorities try to determine the cause of the condition. The hospitalized dtested negative for coronavirus and blood tests have shown no signs of a viral infection such as dengue or chikungunya.
Food and water samples were also analyzed, but some contamination of the liquid was ruled out, said Kesineni Srinivas, deputy chief health minister.
“Water samples were taken and sent for analysis, and no contamination was found. It is a mysterious disease and only laboratory analysis will reveal what it is,” explained Srinivas.
For her part, Dolla Joshi Roy, a surveillance officer for the West Godavari district in Eluru, confirmed to CNN that the patients had tested negative for COVID-19. Roy added that about 180 patients have already been discharged and the rest are stable.
The DW channel adds that Andhra Pradesh state is one of the most affected by the coronavirus with more than 800 thousand confirmed cases.
