The British Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) did not start in the eighth stage of the Giro d’Italia after testing positive for Covid-19, his team reported this Saturday in a statement.
The Tirreno-Adriatico champion developed very mild symptoms in the hours after yesterday’s seventh stage. The Mitchelton-Scott medical team immediately requested a rapid test which indicated a positive result. Subsequently, a PCR test was carried out that confirmed the positive result.
The 28-year-old was isolated in a single room and is being transferred in an ambulance in order to carry out a period of quarantine. His symptoms, however, are still very mild.
Seeking to ensure the safety of the entire peloton, the rest of the team’s riders and Mitchelton-Scott staff have also undergone a quick test and all tested negative.
The RCS company, organizer of the Tour of Italy has authorized the Australian squad to continue in the race and, as a precautionary measure, they will undergo further tests in the coming days.
Team physician Dr. Matteo Beltemacchi explained that “Simon showed a slightly high temperature on Friday night during our routine temperature checks, which are carried out three times a day during the course of the Giro d’Italia.”
“Simon’s health continues to be our main concern and, fortunately, his symptoms are still very mild and he is otherwise in good health. We want to thank RCS for their support in organizing the rapid tests and transporting him”, Beltemacchi adds.
“All the other riders and staff have tested negative and have been allowed to continue the race, but as a precautionary measure we will monitor the situation closely and undergo further tests in the coming days,” he concludes.
