The French President, Emmanuel macron, tested positive for covid-19 this Thursday and will isolate himself for seven days, like several European personalities with whom he was in contact this week.
After the diagnosis established with “RT-PCR tests carried out as soon as the first symptoms appeared”, the French head of state “will be isolated for seven days” in the official residence of La Lanterne, attached to the Palace of Versailles, but “will continue to work and carry out his activities remotely,” the presidency announced in a statement.. “You have real symptoms, cough and significant tiredness”, informed the Government spokesman, Gabriel Attal.
It was later reported that he also had a fever. Brigitte Macron, the president’s wife, who will remain in the Elysee palace, is a contact case, but “shows no symptoms.” On Tuesday he had tested negative for covid-19 in a test carried out before a visit to a pediatric ward at the Saint-Louis hospital in Paris.

Macron’s positive It fell like a bomb in French and European politics because of the intense political agenda that it has maintained in recent days. Visibly, the contagion occurred during the marathon summit of the European Union (EU) last Thursday and Friday, where Macron was negotiating 20 hours without stopping with the leaders of the 27 member countries, including one night.
The heads of Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez; Portugal, Antonio Costa, and Belgium, Alexander de Croo, as well as the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, are some of those who have had to put themselves in isolation after having held recent meetings with him.
In Madrid, for example, the office of the head of the Spanish Government announced that he will keep a preventive quarantine until December 24 after having had contact with Macron, with whom he met on December 14 in Paris. Macron had lunch with Michel on Monday, as well as with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the secretary general of the OECD, Ángel Gurría – on the occasion of the 60 years of the organization – who must maintain quarantine.
For his part, the Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, will not isolate himself, as he has twice tested negative for the coronavirus after being with the president of France, who canceled a trip to Lebanon, where he planned to spend New Year’s Eve with the French soldiers of the Provisional Force Nations in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and meet again with Lebanese leaders.
In France the prime minister has also isolated himself, Jean castex, and the president of the National Assembly, Richard Ferrand, with whom Macron had lunch on Tuesday.
In addition, the French head of state presided over a Council of Ministers and a Defense Council, but the Elysee specified that the other participants will not be quarantined because during those meetings distances were respected and they wore masks.
Macron also attended, on Monday, the draw for the rugby World Cup groups that France will host in 2023 and that same day he held a meeting with the 150 people that make up the Citizen’s Climate Convention.
The Elysee added that the French head of state has received messages from leaders around the world, in which they have wished him a speedy recovery. “I am sorry to hear that my friend Emmanuel Macron tested positive for covid-19. We all wish him a speedy recovery, ”UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who contracted the virus and was in intensive care earlier this year, said on Twitter.
For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared himself “alarmed” and wished his French counterpart a speedy recovery.
Other leaders such as the president of the United States, Donald Trump; German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also sent her messages.
