The third peak of covid-19 in Barranquilla has severely attacked those under 50 years of age. During the last weeks, the bulk of new infections have been reported in this population group.
Humberto Mendoza, Secretary of Health of the District, indicated that this trend is related to their active work performance, which implies traveling around the city.
“It has been shown that infections are concentrated in the population between 20 and 50 years old, especially those who reside in strata 3 and 4,” the official told EL HERALDO.
As of March 28, 58.5% of the infections reported in the capital of Atlántico belong to said age group. The most affected group corresponds to people between 30 and 39 years old, who report 22.3%, followed by young people between 20 and 29 years old (19.9%).
In addition to contagions, this population has concentrated a high consumption of hospital uses, such as ICU and hospital beds.
This thesis was ratified by the scientific director of the General North Clinic, Felipe González, who stated that this age group is presenting a particular behavior compared to the previous peaks.
“They are having a critical development, with severe respiratory symptoms. At this moment we have young people in ventilated intensive care units and receiving a respirator ”, reported the epidemiologist and internist.
The specialist argued that there are multiple factors that affect this situation: “In the behavior of pandemics is the development of mutations, of changes inherent to the virus as it is transmitted and circulates from one individual to another, then this allows the virus has changes ”.
For this reason, he insisted on the responsibility that the youngest should have with regard to self-care measures: use of masks, constant hand washing and physical distancing of two meters.
According to the statistics of the District, those under 50 years of age have contributed only 11% of the deaths due to this disease, very far from the 75.6% reported in the population over 60 years of age.
