Paolo Rossi, the hero of the Italian soccer team that won the 1982 World Cup in Spain, died at the age of 64, his family reported Thursday.
At club level, Rossi first rose to fame as a prolific scorer for the Vicenza, then went to Juventus and later to It’s melan.
His death came after a long illness, according to Italian media reports.
Federica Cappelletti, the player’s wife, posted a photo of the two on social media with the message “Forever.”
Capelletti did not reveal the cause of his death.
Rossi scored 20 goals in 48 games of the selectionnational ion, and more than 100 in Serie A matches when he played for Vicenza, Perugia, Juventus, Milan and Verona.
After his performance in the 1982 World Cup, he received the Golden Ball, which at that time was awarded to the European Player of the Year.
After retiring in the late 1980s, Rossi worked as commentator for Sky, Mediaste and Rai.
“Personal redemption”
Rossi will go down in football history for his plays in the ’82 World Cup, although he was on the verge of missing the competition after being involved in a match-fixing scandal.
Despite the fact that the soccer player maintained his innocence, he was suspended for three years after being accused of being part of the “Totonero” scandal in 1980.
After the player appealed, the suspension was reduced to two years, with which he was able to participate in the World Cup in Spain.
Rossi described the victory in that tournament as a “personal redemption.”
“Part of the culture Italian“
The triumph of the Italian team sparked a wave of emotion in the country, generating a feeling of national unity and joy at a time when Italy was beset by political and social unrest.
Images of Rossi and his teammates becoming champions will forever be etched in popular culture, says Italian journalist Daniele Verri.
“We are all in shock here because Paolo Rossi was a very iconic figure of Italian football, “Verri told the BBC.
“He is part of Italian history that goes beyond football.”
“For those of us who were lucky enough to see him play in the 1982 World Cup, we can never forget what he did.”
“The images of Spain 82 are part of the Italian culture”.
