A volunteer who participated in the clinical studies of the Oxford and AstraZeneca vaccine against covid-19 in Brazil died in the last hours, confirmed the National Health Surveillance Agency, Anisa.

The entity was informed of the man’s death on Monday, October 19, and did not give more details about the affected person, arguing the confidentiality commitments provided in the protocol of the volunteers who are part of the study.

Local media, however, indicated that the affected person would be a 28-year-old doctor from Rio de Janeiro.

The state agency also did not report whether the deceased volunteer received the vaccine or the placebo and indicated that clinical trials are being carried out in the country.

However, sources consulted by media such as Bloomberg and O Globo assure that the participant did not receive the drug, but the placebo.

The vaccine from the University of Oxford and the AstraZeneca laboratory is the main commitment of the Brazilian Government to advance a mass vaccination plan against the coronavirus in the future.

Phase three studies began in that country last June. About 8,000 volunteers participate in clinical trials.
