(CNN) – The Nobel Peace Prize Committee announced the United Nations World Food Program as the winner of the award for 2020.

“The Committee has decided to award the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize to the World Food Program for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to improving conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas, and for acting as a driving force to prevent the use of hunger as a tool for war and conflict, ”said Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Committee during her traditional announcement from Oslo.

“The World Food Program is the largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger and ensuring access to food. In 2019, the Program provided aid to almost 100 million people in 88 countries, ”Reiss-Andersen highlighted.

During the announcement of the Committee televised live as every year, Reiss-Andersen also referred to the effects of the covid-19 pandemic in the world and the work done by the new winner.

“In the context of the pandemic, the World Food Program has shown an amazing ability to intensify its efforts. As the organization itself has stated “Until there is a medical vaccine, food is the best vaccine against chaos,” said the president of the Committee.

Shortly after the announcement in Oslo, the humanitarian organization thanked the award through its Twitter account.

“Our deep appreciation for honoring the World Food Program with the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize. This is a powerful warning to the world as we remember that peace and #zerohunger go hand in hand,” the message reads.

The announcement of the winner for 2020 once again took many by surprise. The World Health Organization, young activist Greta Thunberg, Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, among others, were seen as potential winners.

The award will be awarded on December 10.
