According to a tally by Johns Hopkins University, A total of 123,085 new infections were recorded from Wednesday to Thursday, as well as 1,226 deaths.

On Wednesday 99,660 new cases were reported in the United States, the country most affected by the pandemic in the world.

Thursday’s stat breaks that record at 23,425 cases.

While deaths remain below their worst levels in the spring, Thursday was also the third day in a row that deaths exceeded 1,000. The last time that death toll was found was in early September.

More than 9.6 million people were infected and 234,000 have died in the United States so far from the COVID-19 pandemic, by far the highest figure in absolute terms worldwide.

This new record comes as President Donald Trump, who personally overcame the disease in October and insists the virus will “go away,” fights for his re-election amid the vote count in Tuesday’s election.

His rival, Democrat Joe Biden, has tried to turn the vote into a referendum on Trump’s handling of the health crisis.
