Jared Polis, governor of the state of Colorado, USA, announced on Tuesday that the first case in the USA of the new strain of covid-19, which corresponds to a man in his 20s who had not traveled anywhere recently.
The young man, whose identity was not disclosed, is in isolation in Elber County, near the city of Denver, the Colorado governor said in a statement.
State health authorities are investigating the case and conducting interviews to identify people with whom the man may have had contact.

“There is a lot we don’t know about this new variant of covid-19, but scientists in the UK have warned us that it is significantly more contagious. The health and safety of Coloradans is our highest priority and we will work to closely monitor this case, as well as any other indicator of COVID-19. We are working to prevent the spread of the virus at all levels, “said the governor.
The presence of this first case of the new British strain was confirmed by Colorado state laboratories, which sent a notification to the governmental Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
This month, the British government announced that had detected a new strain of covid-19 that appears to be 70% more contagious than other variables and it could be linked to the increase in infections that has occurred in London and the south-east of England since mid-November.

The detection of the first case of the British strain coincides with an increase in hospitalizations in the United States, which on Monday registered a record number of 121,235 patients admitted for the disease, of which 22,592 are in intensive care units, according to the Covid Tracking Project platform.
The United States is the country in the world most affected by the pandemic with more than 19.3 million detected cases of covid-19 and more than 335,000 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
