In the República de Venezuela neighborhood there is outrage. Everyone talks about a death that they describe as “cruel, unjust and savage”, and the saddest thing is that they point to four policemen as responsible. Yes, to four policemen who should be the heroes, not the villains.

The victim is Ángel Enrique Arrieta Mattos, a resident of block 21, who died yesterday morning at the Hospital Universitario del Caribe. His relatives wait for forensic doctors to deliver the report stating the cause of death, although they say it is due to the beatings he received the day before.

Their relatives speak

Yuranis is 20 years old and a nurse. He is part of the four children left by Ángel, 42, who used to waterproof roofs. She tells her version of events.

“It was 9 in the morning and my dad was drinking liquor a few meters from the house. He was drunk, but he was calm. Four policemen arrived to search him, but since he was close to the house, he did not have the papers with him. My dad got scared and ran to the house and the police followed him and in the living room, where there were children and older adults, they started hitting him with bobbins, kicking and slapping him. When they saw everything beaten, they took him to the CAI of the Olaya Barracks. They tied his hands with a rope, “he said.

Another son of the deceased, who was with him at the time of the attack, pointed out that “these policemen are from the CAI of Las Gaviotas and in addition to beating my father, they threatened him with a firearm, without us being armed. Inside the house they destroyed and took out their pistols ”.

In The Barracks

Yuranis assured that “at 4 in the afternoon they released him because they realized that he was wrong. We treated his wounds, gave him food and took care of him at night. But he started complaining and at 5 in the morning it got worse. We took him urgently to the University and there they told us that he died. My father did not suffer from anything, he was in good health and physical condition so it was the blows that killed him ”, he noted.

The son added that it was the same policemen who returned him to the house. “A patrolman, who was the one who attacked him the most, when he saw that my father was vomiting blood in the CAI, he took him home.”

“My father told us that in El Cuartelillo several policemen beat him, that they hit him very hard and that they said ugly things to him. He told them not to hit him anymore, ”said the son.

This family only hopes that the forensic doctors give their verdict and look for ways to do justice because for them Ángel “was killed while he was defenseless.” The press office of the Metropolitan Police of Cartagena was contacted by this means, but did not give any report or response.
