The new height of Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world, is 8,848.86 meters, a little more than the previous measurement of Nepal and about four meters higher than that of China, countries among which is the great colossus of the Himalayas.

The announcement came when Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Nepalese counterpart Bidya Devi Bhandari jointly exchanged letters to announce the height. Xi said in his letter that China and Nepal reached a consensus last year on jointly announcing the new peak height, Xinhua reports.

For more than a year, teams from the two countries “have overcome all kinds of difficulties, have done their work solidly and have finally come to a conclusion about altitude based on the International Height Reference System,” he said.

Calling Mount Qomolangma – Everest’s local name – “an important symbol of traditional China-Nepal friendship,” Xi said both countries agree to it as the border peak and the “peak of China-Nepal friendship.”

In 1856, the Great Trigonometric Topography Project established the first published altitude of Everest, then known as Peak XV, at 8840 meters. The current official altitude of 8848 meters, recognized by China and Nepal, was already established in 1955 by an Indian study and confirmed in 1975 by a Chinese study.

But in 2005, China again measured the altitude of the mountain and obtained a result of 8844.43 meters. Thus began a discussion between China and Nepal that lasted five years, from 2005 to 2010, according to Wikipedia.

China argued that the measurement should be done up to the altitude of the rock, which is 8844 meters, but Nepal objected that it should be done up to the altitude of the snow, which is 8848 meters.

In 2010, both nations agreed that the altitude of the mountain is 8848 meters, and Nepal acknowledged China’s claim that the altitude to the Everest rock is 8844 meters. Now, in 2020, both countries have closed the matter with a commonly recognized height.
