The French newspaper L’Equipe recently published the list of the 20 cyclists with the highest annual salaries in the world in 2021, a ranking that was replicated by specialized portals in Europe and gave something to talk about on social networks. There appear three Colombian runners: Egan Bernal, Nairo Quintana and Fernando Gaviria, which last year were also in that ‘top’ 20.
According to information from L’Equipe, the highest paid cyclist in the world is still the British Chris Froome, who signed a contract with the Israel Cycling team in which he receives an annual salary of 5.5 million euros. The four-time Tour de France champion was second on the list in 2020 with his € 4.5 million salary at the Ineos team, but now he displaced Peter Sagan from the first step.
In 2o21, the second highest paid cyclist is the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, current champion of the Tour de France. The young star renewed his contract with the UAE team and did so because he was guaranteed an annual salary of 5 million euros.
Egan Bernal is in fifth place in the ranking of cyclists with the best income. The Zipaquirean cyclist receives a salary of 2.8 million euros, slightly higher than he had last year (2.7 million euros). In 2020, the Colombian was the fourth highest paid in the world, but now he fell to the fifth step due to the emergence of Pogacar. Making the conversion to Colombian pesos, Bernal has annual income close to 12,000 million pesos from the contract with his team.
For its part, Nairo Quintana maintains the annual salary of 1.9 million that he agreed upon since his arrival at the Arkea team. That salary allocation places the Boyacense in position 19 on the list, despite the fact that with the same money last year he appeared in box 13.
Fernando Gaviria closes the ‘top’ 20 of the highest paid cyclists in the world, thanks to the 1.8 million euros per season that he receives. The Paisa ‘sprinter’ was sixteenth on last year’s list, but now he has fallen three places.
For 2021, the ranking suffered a complete tumble due to the remarkable performances of some runners who consolidated themselves as winners of some of the most important classics in the world, or because of their good profiles to deliver good results in the mountains, time trials, packaging and other specialties. Such is the case with cyclists like Wout Van Aert, Julian Alaphilippe and Mathieu van der Poel.
