The next April 30 at least one hundred medical students are expected to receive a degree from the National University. Like them, there are hundreds more from other universities that are getting ready to practice their profession in times of pandemic.

The natural emotion to start a new stage in their lives is accompanied by reasoning, prudence and demands.

Rosa Barreto, an intern from the last semester, commented that “With my classmates we agree that, in case of being needed after the degree, must be in the framework in which the proposal arose; that is, progressively but not on the front line in the emergency

He added that “in addition to this, we join the other demands of health personnel. Requesting a fundamental condition to provide our services and that is that all the necessary personal protection elements, having a decent contract in which we are answered for the occupational risks assumed for this task and the benefits to which we would be entitled, as workers, are also recognized. ”

Already these young people, close to graduation, they have received special training in the past weeks in the face of the pandemic.

Sergio Aya, intern of the last semester, indicated that “at this time we are in a COVID training course taught by the university in a virtual way. In our case, the university gave the last semester inmates the opportunity to opt for an advanced degree, or to continue with the care activity as inmates on the schedule set before the emergency. ”

Who will graduate they have many questions waiting for answers: “There is also no clarity for the possible direct call with the IPS, in the midst of the contingency and, furthermore, if this will be done as rural doctors or if we will have a professional card, a point that seems crucial to us as interns in our near future, ”they stated.

But just as there are doubts, there are also certainties. “So what we will do when we have our diplomas will be subject to the fulfillment of these commitments made by the government and understanding the particularities of each of the graduates, “said Rosa.

While Sergio added: “Taking into account their personal vocation, their particular health conditions, the risk that for our profession supposes for us and our next circle It will depend on thinking and feeling therefore the actions of each one, if we come to be called in this contingency and not as it has been stated in decree 538 in a mandatory call.

In the face of the presented pandemic, medical schools of the country, decided to offer the degree option to those who were in their last semester.

Similarly, the National Government, through its Decree 538 of 2020, determined that health professionals, are practicing or in training, must be available before an eventual mandatory call to provide their services.
