At the Nuestra Señora de la Paz psychiatric clinic, located in the heart of Bogotá, it was confirmed a massive spread of the new coronavirus that has so far compromised 40 health workers, including doctors and nurses, after the pertinent tests.

In the analysis made by the authorities, in addition, there are also five positive patients. The authorities assured that more tests are being carried out to determine if there are other infected people.

Of the 40 collaborators of the clinic, 32 are health personnel, five have had symptoms and there is one person in intensive care, Sandra Girón, director of epidemiology and demography at the Ministry of Health explained.

The situation, according to an official source, began after the center, the most important reference in mental illness care in Bogotá, was admitted by a patient transferred from another hospital entity with symptoms of covid-19. His diagnosis was confirmed on April 14.

Once his case was confirmed, there was a reorganization in the hospitalization areas, definition of isolations and identification of contacts. Likewise, the directors of the clinic decided, on their own account, to carry out analyzes on a large part of the staff.

The more than 40 affected, symptomatic or not, have been isolated, are generally in good health, under strict monitoring.

For now, the analysis of more than 100 identified contacts continues, and autonomously the directors of the clinic decided to prevent the entry of new patients.

More people are affected. In fact, this newspaper learned of a letter that the clinic sent to the Bogotá health authorities to speed up the delivery of results of samples taken on April 16 from hospitalized and suspected patients.

For the delays “we have not been able to release patients classified as suspects, despite being stable in mental symptoms, having for this reason three isolated services and overcrowded acute care units ”, wrote the psychiatric center.

The origin of the massive contagion, according to an official source, occurred when a center transferred from another hospital entity with symptoms of covid-19 entered the center, the most important reference in mental illness care in Bogotá. His diagnosis was confirmed on April 14.

Likewise, the contagion chain is still being investigated based on rigorous epidemiological procedures, and in the meantime, according to the directives, a piece of reassurance is being sent to the families of the infected people.

The Bogota Secretary of Health, headed by Alejandro Gómez, made an epidemiological inspection yesterday, in which the protocols and procedures were reviewed. After it, general recommendations were issued and we are waiting to define whether the situation warrants substantive measures.

Until now, it was known that since the clinic carried out the tests autonomously and on the basis that the case count on the new coronavirus is centralized and has to be officially verified, the initial report of 45 infected will be exhaustively reviewed. This process includes ruling out false positives or false negatives, revisit the evidence when necessary and effectively count those affected according to the results.
