The previous night, hundreds of people had already gathered in the Plaza de Mayo, in front of the emblematic Casa Rosada, to enter to fire the world champion, one day after he died of cardiac arrest.

In the obelisk of Buenos Aires, and in the vicinity of the palace, fans of all teams, but especially Boca Juniors, gathered to honor the 10 with songs:

“The opening hours of doors for the general public will be from 6 in the morning (local time),” reported a presidential statement.

The Argentine government estimated that one million people will attend to see it. However, at the last moment it was decided to shorten the wake from three days to one, at the request of the family.

Around midnight, Maradona’s body left the morgue heading to a funeral home, from where it moved to the Casa Rosada surrounded by a strong security device and accompanied by some fans on motorcycles. Further, in every place he arrived, a crowd of heartbroken but euphoric people awaited him.

Upon arriving at the Plaza de Mayo, his coffin, red in color, could be seen briefly for the first time:

Claudia Villafañe, Maradona’s ex-wife, and his two daughters Dalma and Gianinna, arrived at the presidential headquarters before midnight.

Despite the pandemic, many hope that the wake will be as massive as that of Evita Perón, in 1952, or Juan Domingo Perón, in 1974.
