“It was a difficult week for him emotionally. A lot of pressure; that generated a mood drop.”
This is how Diego Armando Maradona began November, as explained on November 2 by Leopoldo Luque, a member of his medical team, shortly after the football legend was admitted to the Ipensa sanatorium, in the city of La Plata.
“His diet affected him. We saw him with a different coloration and with a different attitude, we decided to study him to make him a little better,” Luque continued, explaining that the idea was to leave him hospitalized until “optimized”.
“Diego, if he wants, he stops and leaves. It is not a serious picture nor do we come urgently, “he added.
Maradona had just turned 60 a couple of days earlier, on October 30.
On that day he attended the stadium to lead his team, the La Plata Gymnastics and Fencing Club, in a match against the Board of Trustees, but he did not stay until the final whistle, but withdrew shortly after the match began to ” rest”.
It was a moment that raised concerns about the health of the ex-footballer that were increasing with the passing of the days.
“The images of Maradona arriving at the stadium on his birthday caused concern among his supporters. He needed the help of two people to walk and his body was stiff and stooped,” says the BBC Mundo correspondent in Argentina, Verónica from Buenos Aires Smink.
“Shortly after, it was announced that he would be admitted for a medical check-up, which eventually determined that he had a bruise on the head“.
On November 3, a day after the diagnosis, Maradona was transferred to the Olivos Clinic in the Province of Buenos Aires, north of the Federal Capital, where he was operated on for a subdural hematoma, a clot detected between the skull and the base of the brain that is usually produced from a blow.
The surgical intervention lasted about 80 minutes and the hematoma could be removed without complications, according to Leopoldo Luque.
“We are going to see the evolution, day by day, but for now the beginning was very good. It was a surgery that is not highly complex, but it is still surgery,” he said.
Doctor Luque reported two days after the operation that Maradona wanted to leave the hospital, but they managed to convince him to stay a little longer.
“There is Maradona for a while”
In the same way, he revealed that the Ten suffered a withdrawal picture: “There is a reality. Apart from this, we all know about Diego, we saw that he went through some episodes of confusion. We associate it with a withdrawal condition. The idea is to do a withdrawal treatment, which we think will last a few days. “
Maradona was finally discharged on November 11 and was transferred to a house in the Province of Buenos Aires to continue his recovery there.
From the doors of the Olivos Clinic, the former soccer player’s lawyer, Matías Morla, was one of the first to speak.
“Diego had perhaps the hardest moment of his life. I think it was a miracle that the stroke on his head was detected. could have taken life“.
“The good thing is that Diego is whole, he is firm, there is Maradona for a while,” he added.
He got up in good spirits and went to lie down
The BBC Mundo correspondent in Buenos Aires, Veronica Smink, recalls that when it was announced that Maradona’s operation had been a success and he was discharged, many in Argentina breathed a sigh of relief: “They assumed that their hero had once again overcome a health problem, like so many others that he overcame throughout his life. ”
The next day, Morla denounced on Twitter that a “number” of drones were flying over the house where Maradona was continuing his recovery and threatened to take legal action.
“I ask for privacy for Diego and all the neighbors,” he tweeted.
According to information from the Argentine news agency Telam, who had access to Maradona’s surroundings, on Wednesday, November 25, the ex-footballer got up “in good condition”, took the medication prescribed by the doctors and went to lie down, as he did. “usually since his discharge from the sanatorium.”
And around 1pm he passed away from cardiac arrest.
“They believed that Maradona was immortal”
“The news that he died of a heart attack just days after his environment assured that he was well caused consternation. Many believed that Maradona was immortal, a true God of football,” says Smink.
Meanwhile, one day after his death, many of his followers still have not assimilated the news.
“In Buenos Aires, his admirers repeat the phrase: ‘I still can’t believe he’s dead.’
They share the sentiment that Lionel Messi conveyed on Wednesday in a post he published after Maradona’s death became known: ‘Diego is eternal.’
This Thursday, not even the coronavirus stopped thousands of people who approached the Casa Rosada, the Argentine presidential residence where the body of Diez rests for the moment, to say goodbye to an idol who gave many a large number of football joys.
“And they also wish you to rest in peace, after a life full of turbulence“Smink concludes.
