Kenzo Takada, a Japanese designer and creator of the brand that bore his name, died of covid-19, according to a spokesman for the firm quoted by French media on Sunday.
The 81-year-old author of different collections of clothing was in a Paris health center at the time he died, the statement said.
Known for his colorful floral prints and different graphic resources, he was the first Japanese designer to gain prominence on the Parisian fashion scene.
He came to France in the 1960s and developed the rest of his career there. Until his retirement at the end of the last century.
With almost 8,000 designs, the Japanese “never stopped celebrating the fashion and the art of living, “said its spokesperson.
Reactions
The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, paid tribute to him on Twitter stating that he was someone with “immense talent.”
“Paris is now mourning by one of his sons, “said the authority.
For his part, Sidney Toledano, director of the conglomerate LVMH, owner of the Kenzo brand, said he was a fan of Takada’s line of designs since the 70s.
“He was definitely a great designer,” he added.

Born in 1939 near Osaka, Kenzo Takada arrived in France by boat with the aim of settling in Paris.
He created his internationally renowned brand after 1970 and launched his first men’s line in 1983.
A few years later the collections of sports and informal clothing named Kenzo Jeans and Kenzo Jungle.
He sold the Kenzo brand to LVMH in 1993 and retired from fashion six years later.
