The French cyclist Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step), world road champion, wore the arcoris jersey in a spectacular finish to win the second stage of the Tirreno Adritico, between Camaiore and Chiusdino, of 202 kilometers, in which Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) kept the leader’s blue jersey.
Exciting finale in Chiusdino. The Portuguese Joao Almeida, survivor of the escape that seemed definitive together with the Russian Sivakov and Mikel Landa, already had the victory in hand 100 meters from the banner, but his teammate Alaphilippe appeared as an obs to raise his arms in winner.
The 28-year-old Gallic cyclist raised his arms in advance, with the “Liege syndrome”, and the same thing happened to him, but he won with a time of 5 hours, 1 minute and 32 seconds, ahead of Mathieu Van der Poel, Van Aert and Tadej Pogacar.
Agonic end for Almeida, also for Landa, who was at a high level until the last meters, and happy for Alaphilippe for his first win of the season and for Van Aert, who continued to lead, with 4 seconds over the Frenchman and 8 over the French. Van der Poel. Mikel Landa is fifth at 11 seconds and Alex Aranburu tenth, at 14.
SAFE LEAK, QUIET PURSUIT
The stage of the first high end offered a flat part and an incessant up and down in the second until the Chiusdino goal. In the kindest part the escape of the day was formed at the beginning with 6 men: Pellaud, Burghard, Albanese, the green jersey of the Eolo Kometa mountain, his partner Archibald, Simone Velasco and Vanspeybrouck.
Consensual escape in the absence of danger to the general, hence the rent reached 5 minutes. The tranquility of the group in such a long day gave for the talks between the riders, even between great rivals of the cyclocrs, the Azzurra Van Aert jersey with the Dutch champion Van der Poel.
For that of defending the leadership, the Jumbo Visma took command of the chase, without going crazy in the first climbs of the route. The last 45 kilometers concentrated the points of maximum orographic attraction, with the Poggio Alla Croce (3.5 to 7 km) and the final climb to Chiusdino (7.5 to 3.5 km).
BERNAL BREAKS THE RACE, LANDA REACTS AHEAD
Climbing the Poggio Alla Croce, with the escape into oblivion, Egan Bernal attacked. The Colombian took Asgreen and De Buyst to the wheel and selected a group, still large, that was going to fight for the stage in the permanent up and down to the finish line.
Before the attack of the winner of the 2019 Tour, a dozen riders reacted, from where Mikel Landa, Simon Yates, Sivakov and Joao Almeida jumped to start another escape. With 27 km to the finish the difference was less than half a minute.
The Jumbo Visma took up the chase in defense of the blue jersey, throwing hard the Norwegian Tobias Foss, the last winner of the Tour of the Future. Near Siena, the scene of the Strade Bianche, the stage became a classic in its last section. The narrow Tuscan roads witnessed a thrilling chase of 4 luxury riders against the main platoon.
ALAPHILIPPE, AWESOME, RUINS ALMEIDA
Vibrant finish with Landa in the sauce. With 13 kilometers to go the quartet had 38 seconds, but behind the Pogacar UAE lent a hand in the relays, which endangered the aspirations of a leading group that resists giving up.
The pressure made Yates, defender of the title, give in first, and the rest were in a rush to avoid the inevitable. Sivakov attacked, Almeida did the same twice, and the second time he opened the gap. Mikel Landa could not respond to the fray and was hit along with the Russian.
At 1,000 meters from the finish line, Almeida was running wild, convinced of victory, but the finish line seemed eternal. He had the enemy at home, but Alaphilippe could do nothing but run for his companion and victory. His start was tremendous. He won in time to raise his arms, but almost did not take Liege’s annoyance.
The third stage will take place this Friday between Monticiano and Gualdo Tadino, with a route of 189 kilometers with an undulating profile and an interesting uphill finish.
