The French cyclist Julian Alaphilippe has been proclaimed Champion of the World by winning this Sunday in the online test, contested on a tough route of 258.2 kilometers and some 5,000 meters of positive unevenness, starting and finishing in the Italian town of Imola.

With a time of 6 hours, 38 minutes and 34 seconds, Alaphilippe prevailed in the arrival at Imola ahead of Belgian Wout van Aert and Swiss Marc Hirschi, silver and bronze, completing the World Road Championship podium.

An attack 12 kilometers from the end earned the Frenchman to open a small gap that allowed him to reach the finish line outstandingly to win the gold medal and the arcoris jersey.

The Spaniard Alejandro Valverde finished in eighth place, 53 seconds behind the French.

The race was marked by a flight of seven runners that formed as soon as the race started and was neutralized 70 kilometers from the end.
