His life revolves around an Eastern philosophy called Taoism. He does not eat animals as a principle of life in a sport in which proteins are religious. This is the story of the new RCN Classic champion.
A philosophy of life, perhaps religion from China. That between the lines is summarized in being in balance with the universe and life itself. He does not eat animals, an almost unexplored route in the world of cycling in which protein is almost everything. Almost, because José Tito Hernández showed that life rewards when one does not seek to be faithful to others but to oneself. The 25-year-old Antioqueño from Team Medellín is the new and first exponent champion of the RCN Classic Taoism.
His favorite menu is lentils, beans, chickpeas, eggs, yogurts, cheese, peanuts, almonds, walnuts. In which the honey has a sacred space for him. All integral, all natural. “In my house they taught me that animals should not be killed, that meat does have protein, but it is not so healthy. And the truth is that proteins can be obtained from other foods, I get more flavor out of beans or soup. I prepare hard, I train well and I don’t need meat, everything is to make balance “, he says in an interview with El Espectador.
“I am very happy with his victory, I have to thank our philosophy that has shaped him for this. to show him that it is possible in a world that says that without eating meat you cannot live. He has always been nourished by other natural things. For there to be meat, there must be a dead person, to kill a being that has life. We do not have to sacrifice other living beings to feed ourselves ”, the happy words of José Luis Hernández Muñoz, father of José Tito, who works with coffee, banana, yucca, orange and lemon on his farm in El Carmen de Viboral.
His nickname in Taoism is Pedalogro, which means that the force comes to him pedaling things. “Our way of living is healthy, that is to say: ‘Man, know yourself and you will know the universe'”.
At the end of the seasons, Tito goes with his parents to a Taoist temple in Boyacá, removed from the city, to recharge with nature in search of one of the most important words in his dictionary: harmony. “I know it is something totally different from what people are used to, but for me it is a great teaching and way of living life. It is having positive thoughts and knowing that the value of the word is very important. I like all that, ”says Tito.
His cycling career began when Juan de Dios Fajardo, a man who wanted to build his cycling school in the municipality of El Carmen de Viboral went to the Santa María educational institution to summon children. Tito, eight years old, more seduced by the determination of a neighbor with whom he was cycling to study, gave a yes that today has him as the illustrious winner of one of the two most important races in Colombian cycling.
“I told my friend that we didn’t even have a bike, but we got in. He left soon after, but I kept going. They lent me a bike, people helped me with the uniforms, until I started competing ”. A verb that translated into being champion of the 2010 Back to the Future, the most important junior race in the country. And then he followed in the wake when he climbed to the top of the podium in the youth category, in the Vuelta del Porvenir.
“A peeling that started from nothing, from misery, along with Walter Vargas and many more. Seeing him win is a source of pride. As a person he is a great human being and as an athlete not to mention. Already in the status that he is and has not grown, that speaks a lot about him. I tell him that you have to be great, but always humble. And he is great ”, the words of Juan de Dios Fajardo, his godfather in cycling and member of the Paisa Pride, a team in which Tito was active until last year.
He came to the most powerful team in Latin America to stand in line, to work for others. Or so his plans said. But after the great time trial he did in Finland in the fifth stage of the Clásico RCN, he was left with the yellow leader jersey by hundredths of a difference with respect to his teammate Óscar Sevilla. In the technical talk the next day the script was to support Tito.
“I said: I’m going to learn, I’m young, I know that Seville is a great leader and we have to help him. When I joined the team I found a giant harmony, I saw the quality of person that Oscar is and that motivated me even more to help him. And he told me that he wanted me to win. I am a newcomer and seeing everything that happened gives me a lot of confidence and joy ”, said Tito about one of his references. “I admire Seville, since I started running I looked at him and see him here at his age … Many people say to retire, but how are you going to retire if you are the most disciplined of the team, you see him judicious with meal times, he gets up early, he is first in the dining room, he is the first to go to bed at night, he trains like few others, it is a lot of professionalism and dedication together. I’ve learned a lot from him, ”he added.
A title that is the sign of his growth as a cyclist. Always a talented man on the short mountains, but not on the long slopes. Nor in the tests against the clock. “I focused on preparing those two points and that has led me to be champion”, closes in a total harmony between cycling and life itself.
