Former soccer player Jhon Viáfara was sentenced this Thursday to 135 months (11 years and three months) in prison for drug trafficking, in a court in Texas, United States.
According to the authorities, the 2004 Copa Libertadores champion with Once Caldas was making logistical preparations for the shipment of large drug shipments that traffickers from the Sinaloa and Gulf cartels received.
Viáfara, 42, was extradited to the United States on January 24, 2020 and then, in December of last year, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to send cocaine to that country.
You can read: “If I were a drug trafficker, I would be worried”: Jhon Viáfara hours before his extradition to the United States.
Apparently, the ex-footballer was in charge of coordinating the shipping routes and the payment of the payroll of the boatmen and of the people in charge of packing and transporting the alkaloid, the vast majority in speedboats.
“He had it all: world fame, wealth and professional level; despite all this he chose to use his talents to promote the evil of drug trafficking,” authorities said.
And they added: “Traffickers should take note: no matter who you are, no matter where you live in the world, the United States will prosecute you if you join a conspiracy to send drugs to our country.”
It is necessary to mention that the Valle del Cauca began his career with América de Cali in 1996. He promoted with Deportivo Pasto in 1998 and then returned to his home club, where he was champion in 2000. He also went through Equidad, Pereira, Junior, Medellín, Cali and Golden Eagles.
He also played abroad for Portsmouth and Southampton, in England, and for Real Sociedad, in Spain.
