Horacio Serpa passed away at the age of 77

Horacio Serpa, one of the most experienced Colombian politicians in the Liberal Party, died this Saturday at the age of 77.

The news was confirmed by his son Horacio José Serpa through his Twitter account. “With immense pain I inform you that my father has passed away today,” he said.

Serpa was Governor of the Department of Santander, Minister of the Interior, Senator of the Republic (2014-2018) and candidate for the presidency on three occasions (1998, 2002 and 2006).

“With my family we will always carry him in our hearts and we will remember his teachings,” reflected Serpa’s son, who holds a seat in the Senate.

The Liberal Party community “deeply” regretted the death. “Former President César Gaviria Trujillo and his family together with councilors, senators, councilors, governors, mayors, representative deputies and the liberal people regret his departure,” they asserted.

Former President Álvaro Uribe stated that “with the death of Dr. Horacio Serpa Uribe, a cycle to which I never sensed the end concluded. I was united with him by a long-time friendship, coincidences and sharp differences. I expressed my respect and affection, which I reiterated in the final term that we share in the Senate. “

For his part, Attorney Fernando Carrillo recalled Serpa’s legacy and sent a message to his family. “Horacio Serpa, former president of the 1991 Constituent Assembly and one of the great architects of the social rule of law that has consolidated the spirit of our Constitution, has left.
