Hollywood’s awards season kicks off this Sunday with a rare Golden Globes gala.
Two months later than usual, the awards given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA, for its acronym in English) are held virtually due to the pandemic and with their hosts, the comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, in opposite cities (New York and Los Angeles, respectively).
Three women made history by being included in the category of address, the first time that more than one woman has been nominated in this section.
Regina King, Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell compete alongside David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin.
The nominees and winners are chosen by 87 members of the association, which in recent days was the subject of a boycott campaign call #TimesUpGlobes after it became known that none of its members is black.
The organization responded that it will put into action a plan to include black and other traditionally underrepresented members.
Fey and Poehler addressed the issue in the opening speech of the ceremony: “The association is made up of 90 international journalists, none black. A couple may be ghosts and the German member is rumored to be a sausage with a drawn face. “
“The prizes are stupid”they both said. “But even with stupid things, inclusion is important,” Fey said, then demanded that the HFPA change the composition of its members.
Questions also returned this year that the choices of nominees and winners can be influenced by promotions and gifts from production companies, something the association has denied.
