Germany returns from Wednesday until January 10 to “hard confinement”, with non-essential shops and closed schools, to stop the spread of the coronavirus that despite a month and a half of restrictions reached record figures this week.

The central government and the federated states agreed to this step in an emergency videoconference to avoid the collapse of the health system, responding to the calls of the experts and following the cascade of regional measures that have been adopted in recent days.

“It is the day to do what is necessary”, toGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a press conference called urgently to announce the new measures, in which she argued that the previous restrictions “have not been sufficient.”

The Chancellor, who stressed that it is about avoiding “overload of the health system” minimizing interpersonal contacts, acknowledged that the restrictions severely affect “many people.”

Closing of non-essential shops and schools

The agreement includes the closure of all commercial establishments considered non-essential, which are added to leisure, culture and gastronomy, which suspended their activity at the beginning of November.

Schools and nurseries will also be closed for three and a half weeks, leaving the door open to distance education and establishing guard checkpoints in some centers for exceptional cases, such as children of parents with essential professions.

Meetings will continue to be limited to five people from two homes (not counting those under 14 years old), although conditions will be slightly relaxed between December 24 and 26 to allow family gatherings (although not on New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Eve and Kings).
