The Italian cyclist Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadier), protagonist from start to finish, won this Wednesday with a test of strength the fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia, on a 225-kilometer route between the southern towns of Mileto and Camigliatello Silano, in the that the Portuguese Joao Almeida (Deceunick-Quick Step) kept the pink jersey.
Ganna, world time trial champion, sealed his second victory in this Giro after the opening timer, finishing the solo event in 5 hours, 59 minutes and 17 seconds, ahead of Austrian Patrick Konrad (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Almeida .
Almeida managed to retain his pink jersey, in a stage in which the Spaniard Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-McLaren) entered eighth and reached second place in the general classification, 43 seconds behind the leader.
After four days in Sicily, the group traveled to the Calabria region for an intense stage, marked by three demanding climbs, to Catanzaro, Tirolo and, above all, the last one, to the Vlico de Montescuro, which was followed by a long descent to the final.
Eight riders, including Filippo Ganna, winner of the opening time trial, Colombian Jonathan Restrepo (Androni) or Spaniard Hctor Carretero (Movistar), were the first to attack and three of them reached the final climb together.
Restrepo suffered and fell from the escape, but Carretero, Ganna and Edoardo Zardini (Vini Zab) still faced the intense climb towards Montescuro with strength on their legs, while, further back, Jonthan Caicedo, the absolute protagonist on Etna, began to slow down. For the Ecuadorian it was a bad day, finishing outside the first ten positions of the general.
In wintry weather, with rain, fog, and darkness, Carretero tried to signal his rivals, but Ganna controlled his attack and eventually ran away, taking an advantage of more than a minute over his pursuers.
The Italian, world time trial champion, led the way to the top of the mountain and made the final descent, notably hampered by the wet road from the heavy rain.
Ganna did not lose pace and had time to lift his hands from the handlebars and kiss his shirt before crossing the finish line and certifying his second victory in this Giro, the first of his career.
It was an optimal day for Pello Bilbao, who finished eighth and took second place overall, snatching it from Jonathan Caicedo, 43 seconds behind the leader, while dans Jakob Fuglsang (Astana), came ninth and placed seventh in the general, one minute and 19 from Almeida.
He Italy tour continue this Thursday with the dispute of its sixth stage, of 189 kilometers, starting in Castrovillari and finishing in Matera.
