“We have accompanied the Government in all the provisions established to mitigate the impact of the virus in the country, under the perspective that health comes first. However, a decision of this magnitude on such a special date for Colombians will further affect formal trade, which has proven to follow to the letter all the indications and protocols required by mayors and governors, “said Jaime Alberto Cabal, president Fenalco.

He added that before the already difficult scenario of mandatory confinement imposed throughout the national territory, these initiatives of some local governments are added that end up affecting not only the economy, but the generation of employment and income to the most vulnerable households.

He said that according to a recent Anif report, it is inappropriate that additional measures are being proposed to contain the virus, such as a possible total ban on the consumption and sale of alcoholic beverages, under the pretext of reducing cases of domestic violence (as has been argued) because official reports do not show that, in the period of isolation, domestic violence has increased due to alcohol consumption. On the contrary, these measures affect the economy, the generation of employment and would impact the tax collection of the territorial entities that use this source to finance, precisely, health care in their territories.

All this, not to mention the increase in contraband liquor or, what is worse, adulterated, generated by the implementation of this prohibition.

“We continue to insist that the success factor of the measures against this pandemic lies in the coordinated work with governors and mayors. There must be synchronization and not make isolated decisions. On the other hand, it has always been Fenalco’s objective, in conjunction with companies in the liquor sector, to work on policies associated with responsible consumption, ”Cabal Sanclemente concluded.
