The remains of the Venezuelan doctor José Gregorio Hernández, of whom many citizens of the country are fervent devotees, was exhumed this Monday, a necessary step before the beatification that was authorized by Pope Francis.

This is a requirement demanded by the Vatican to verify whether the future blessed is buried there and to verify if everything coincides with the act that was drawn up after a first exhumation in 1975, as detailed by the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference.

In that year, the remains of José Gregorio Hernández were transferred from the General Sur Cemetery in Caracas to the central church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, where they currently rest.

During the act, medical pathologists, specialists, and the legal prosecutors of the Church, who act as forensic witnesses, inspected the remains of the doctor who, if the plans are fulfilled, will be beatified in the first quarter of 2021.

The specialists extract relics called “first degree”, which consist of small fragments of bones, to be sent to each diocese and archdiocese in the country, as well as to Rome.

The act was broadcast live on the same day that marks the 156th anniversary of the birth of the future blessed, known as “the doctor of the poor.”

Relive the ceremony:

On June 19, when Pope Francis authorized his beatification, Venezuelan Cardinal Baltazar Porras praised José Gregorio Hernández as a symbol of unity for the entire country, even above the liberator Simón Bolívar.

The future blessed, who was run over in Caracas almost 101 years ago, earned his halo of sanctity both in Venezuela and in neighboring countries for his work on behalf of the most disadvantaged and his demands to demand more attention from governments towards the inland regions of Venezuela.

For this reason, he is already considered a saint among the most humble of Venezuela and a good part of Andean America, where numerous miracles are attributed to him and where parishioners have asked for his intervention for years to cure themselves of all kinds of medical problems.

As a doctor, he worked in the committee of Venezuelan experts who worked to mitigate the spread of the pandemic called “Spanish flu”, which is why many parishioners have come to him to ask him to intercede and free the world from COVID-19.

Francisco has recognized one of the miracles attributed to him and dates back to March 15, 2017, when the girl, 10-year-old Yaxury Solórzano Ortega, was shot in the head during an assault on her father.

The doctors informed his parents that he was going to die, his mother prayed to José Gregorio and Solórzano was cured, according to the version of the relatives.
